History

The Down Bloodhounds, formerly the Down Farmers Hunt, was formed in July 1994 using hounds drafted from the Windsor Forest Bloodhounds. We are one of only two registered packs of Bloodhounds in Northern Ireland operating throughout County Down hunting natural country. The current master is John Rafferty and in addition to his role as Master John is also Huntsman.

The Clean Boot? – the scent

The Down Bloodhounds hunt the 'clean boot' i.e a runner. The runner is acquainted with the hounds allowing them to recognise his scent, he then sets off on a pre-determined course and given about a thirty minute start (depending on the scenting conditions) after which the hounds are laid on the scent.

Since the Huntsman knows the general direction of the quarry he is able to ‘cast’ the hounds in that direction influencing a speedy getaway. The hunt is usually divided into three or four runs the length of which will vary according to terrain etc. and allowing the runner time to recuperate before setting off. Bloodhounds have a distinctive deep ‘note’ when hunting the line and the music from a pack in full cry is exhilarating and on a par with that of a foxhound pack!
